Proceedings of a symposium held in Los Angeles in 1989. This volume reviews the history and current status of shrimp farming activities in North America and the Caribbean islands, presents areas of technological advances that appear to hold particular promise for shrimp aquaculture, and considers the economic and business environment for shrimp farming. The papers from this session, augmented with a description of the shrimp farming industry in Mexico and a case study of semi-intensification of shrimp farming in Ecuador, compromise the contents of this volume. The final paper is included to provide one view of the development potential of shrimp farming from the private sector.
