Eleven Seaweed Farms in Wando County Have Acquired ASC-MSC Certification Eleven farms for the seaweeds tot ( Sargassum fusiforme ) and dasima ( Saccharina japonica ) located inWando County, Jeollanam-do have newly acquired ASC-MSC certification as an international eco- friendly seafood product. These farms are the first in the world to obtain ASC-MSC certification for kelp, tot and dasima, and, with this certification, Korea has become the country with the largest number of ASC-MSC certifications for seaweed farms. To obtain ASC-MSC certification, the government must guarantee the rights and safety of workers from the environment, including water quality, ecosystem and no use of antibiotics. It is not easy to obtain due to difficult certification procedures, high costs and long-term screening. Wando County andWando Eco-Friendly Marine Products Cooperative have been consulted by experts. The topics were 1) Collection and disposal of marine waste, 2) Education for changing awareness of the environment and society required for certification, and 3) Efforts were made in scientific research on the marine environment (sediment and water quality investigation). Currently, Wando County is pursuing expansion of ASC-MSC certification to certified seaweed varieties. Education and consulting are also being offered to aquaculture companies that wish to obtain ASC certification for abalone farms. In addition, through collaboration with aquaculture companies, distributors and research institutes, Wando County is also promoting certification of processing and distribution companies.
