ANTI-TUMOR ACTIVITY IN EXTRACTS FROM Barleria lupulina Lindl. ON TUMOR OF FRESH WATER TILAPIA FISH (Oreochromis mossambicus) AND ITS ANALYSIS BY MITOTIC CHROMOSOMAL ABERRATION STUDY.
The present study was undertaken to assess the anti-tumor activity in leaf extracts of Barleria lupulina (BLPE) on -ray (1.2Gy) induced tumor in fresh water tilapia fish Oreochromis mossambicus. The fishes were divided into three sets as shown in Table 1.
Cytogenetic study was carried out to investigate the effect. Seven different types of structural chromosomal aberrations from the gill cells were observed and studied.
Tumor (below the right nostril, 5mm/3mm) was observed in a fish (SET II) after 13 days of At this stage, 1% BLPE was injected in the fish. Then, the tumor decreased in size and eventually, subsided after 9 days of injection (Fig 1).
For SET II fishes, maximum chromosomal aberrations were observed after 16 hr of treatment (19.25%), whereas that for SET III was 7.69%.
Therefore BLPE was found show anti-clastogenic and anti tumor activity in tilapia fishes, Oreochromis mossambicus, to a significant level, and may be an answer to anti-cancer drug.
