Latin American & Caribbean Aquaculture 2025

LACQUA25 will be the annual meeting of the WAS Latin American and Caribbean Chapter. Following the successful previous LACQUA meetings, LACQUA25 will be held for the first time in Chile.

LACQUA25 will be held in Puerto Varas, Chile. This country is considered a leader in the aquaculture industry in Latin America.

Aquaculture is one of Chile's main economic activities. At a global level, Chile is the seventh country in the world in aquaculture production and the first in America. Salmon is the main aquatic species farmed in the country - Chile is the second largest producer of Atlantic salmon in the world after Norway and the largest producer of coho salmon in the world - but mollusks such as chorito (Chilean mussel), oysters and abalone, and some types of algae are also farmed. The vast majority of Chilean aquaculture production is concentrated in the southern part of the country, mainly in the inland sea of the Los Lagos Region and in the fjords and channels of Aysén and Magallanes, but the activity is also present in northern Chile.

Governance: A Pillar for the Sustainability of Aquaculture in the Context of Climate Change

Plenary Speakers

Alicia Gallardo Lagno

Global challenges for animal health in aquaculture in the context of climate change

Alicia Gallardo is a veterinarian with over 25 years of experience at the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service of Chile (SERNAPESCA), where she served as Deputy Director of Aquaculture and later as National Director. She led the response to the ISA virus outbreak in the salmon industry, designing and implementing Chile’s national aquaculture health management model. She also established, trained, and led the first regional aquatic animal health inspection team in SERNAPESCA’s salmon farming sector. Gallardo went on to become Chile’s Undersecretary for Fisheries and Aquaculture—the first woman to hold that position. Currently, she is President of the Aquatic Animal Health Standards Commission of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), a member of the FAO’s working group on biosecurity in aquaculture (PMP/AB), a FAO consultant on aquatic biosecurity, and an advisor to the WOAH Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Stewardship in Aquaculture (CASA).
