Dr. Luís André
Sampaio is a Professor of Marine Fish Culture at the Oceanographic Institute of
the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG) in Brazil. A former Vice-President
of the Brazilian Aquaculture Society (Aquabio), he also served on the Board of
Directors of the LACC (Latin American and Caribbean Chapter of WAS) and
Aquabio. He just finished his term at the Board of Directors of WAS
(2013-2015). In 2006, Dr. Sampaio was Chairman of the Brazilian Aquaculture
Meeting. He was also a member of the National Organizing Committee for WORLD
AQUACULTURE 2011 in Natal, Brazil, and
has chaired numerous sessions at WAS meetings over the years. His international
experience includes an internship at the former Tokyo University of Fisheries
in Japan and a sabbatical at Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
Beginning in 2004, Professor Sampaio helped to establish a fruitful
international student exchange student program with Virginia Tech (Hampton,
Virginia), a program which is still expanding today. Professor Sampaio has been actively engaged
in aquaculture research since 2000, when he earned his doctor’s degree and
began advising students and building the Program of Aquaculture at FURG. Since
then, 33 master and 9 doctoral students have graduated, and there are currently
9 undergraduate and graduate students under his supervision; with a focus on
mariculture of flounder and cobia. Professor Sampaio has published 10 book
chapters and 79 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
