Your Role at HMC

As a Principal Consultant specialising in fisheries, you will take a leading role in shaping fisheries policy and management initiatives in the UK and internationally. Your responsibilities will include:

• Fisheries Policy & Management Leadership: leading projects that address the most pressing fisheries policy and management challenges, ensuring alignment with sustainable development goals and best practice.
• Project Delivery: managing key fisheries-focused projects across HMC’s diverse portfolio, delivering high-quality outputs that influence policy and practice.
• Thought Leadership: representing HMC as a thought leader in sustainable fisheries management, contributing to knowledge sharing, industry discussions, and thought leadership.
• Client Engagement: building and maintaining strong relationships with clients and stakeholders, with a focus on intergovernmental, regional, and national fisheries bodies.

Requirements

Qualifications for Success

To excel in this role, you will need:

• Strong project management experience and the ability to manage multiple projects in parallel.
• 8+ years of experience in the field of fisheries policy & management, with a proven track record of delivering impactful projects.
• A post-graduate degree in a related field.
• Familiarity with the process of fisheries management, from bringing science into policy, the design and application of management and conservation measures.
• Knowledge of the bodies involved in fisheries policy and management at international and national levels.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills, ideally with demonstrable experience interacting with the fisheries sector, regulators, NGOs, and coastal communities.
• Excellent and demonstrable written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate science into actionable policy and management advice.
• A strategic and innovative mindset, coupled with the ability to make informed decisions backed by evidence.

Desirable, but not essential, experience for this role includes:

• Broader integrated marine management knowledge.
• An ability to situate fisheries within the broader system of marine management and planning and knowledge of the interaction between fisheries and other offshore industries.
• Knowledge and/or application of social science, ideally in a fisheries or coastal context
• Experience working with multi-lateral global organisations such as the UN and its associated bodies and the World Bank.
• Experience delivering monitoring & evaluation projects.

Location and Compensation

Roles are fully remote and home-based in the UK, with potential domestic and international travel requirements. To be eligible for this role, you must currently reside in the UK and have the legal right to work in the UK.

The salary range for this role is £43,000 – £49,999. Please note, staff typically join the company at the bottom of the relevant salary band and will benefit from an annual salary review where pay rises will be awarded in line with performance. Roles are typically full-time, 37.5 hours per week, but we are open to considering requests for part-time hours or alternative working patterns.
