Job Details

Environmental Technician-Aquaculture -$58,130.59 annually for a 40-hour work week.

Under direction of the Department Head, Bay Management Specialist(s), and/or Environmental Analyst(s) assists in aspects of the operation of the town’s shellfish hatchery, nursery, field grow-out, seeding and educational programs, which grows seed shellfish for enhancement of the public resource. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Supervises Environmental Aide(s), laborer(s), seasonal staff and/or volunteer(s);
  • Collects and analyzes data on shellfish growth rates and distribution in hatchery, nursery and field grow out systems and seeding grounds;
  • Assists staff in writing annual reports of operations and producing maps illustrating seed shellfish distribution.  This entails tabulating and compiling data and making calculations;
  • Assists Department Head in writing reports for grants;
  • Assists Department Head in seeking quotes and making purchases;
  • Assists staff in maintaining safety protocols at all departmental sites and in regard to all equipment
  • Tabulates data and produces spreadsheets and charts on all aspects of culturing shellfish including growth data and dissemination;
  • Consults with other governmental agencies, public interest groups and educational institutions involved in the study and protection of the marine/estuarine environment;
  • Carries out biological and chemical protocols and procedures for culture of marine organisms in the hatchery, nursery and field. This includes conducting algae culture procedures, shellfish water exchanges and size grading including conducting counts on shellfish and algae cultures, spawning, feeding larvae and post-set juveniles.  Supervises other workers as needed;
  • May assume responsibility for areas of marine culture contributing to overall crop production including hatchery, nursery and field culture of shellfish. Supervises other workers as needed. 
  • Maintains infrastructure support systems for marine culture work, by their nature unique to the context in which they exist. These include, but are not limited to, systems providing water, air and illumination for life support of plants and animals, food production systems and systems for the accommodation of organisms. Input can be rendered in system design, engineering and construction, and this presumes ongoing modifications of such. Supervises other workers as needed;
  • Assists in carrying out protocols and procedures for operation of marine culture systems, also by their nature unique to the context in which they exist, including in-field operations and associated marine activities.  These include size grading, restocking, and counting/measuring shellfish during grow out stages.  Supervises other workers as needed;
  • Assumes responsibility for operations and activities serving marine culture systems and support infrastructure.  This includes maintaining awareness of systems (water/air pumps, placement of shellfish during transfers, etc.) and mitigating against potential harmful issues.  Supervises other workers as needed;
  • Performs maintenance of marine culture systems and support infrastructure.        Supervises other workers as needed;
  • Conducts educational tours of facilities and/or interacts with the public at outreach events by giving an overview of the work of the department, answering questions and maintaining a professional demeanor;
  • Operates department truck(s), boat(s) and tools in order to perform above tasks as needed

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, and the annual salary is $58,130.59 with benefits, including paid vacation, sick and personal time, enrollment in the New York State and Local Retirement system, and health care and dental and vision coverage. 

Requirements

The minimum qualifications for this position are graduation from a college with federally authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, one of the natural or physical sciences, environmental studies, or a related field.
