Job Details

These positions plan and implement a professional, diverse fisheries management program to protect and improve sport (and commercial fishing if applicable) on all lakes, streams, flowages, rivers, and ponds within the assigned geographical area.

Salary Information

Starting pay for this position is between $31 to $35 per hour ($64,480 – $72,800 annually).

Pay on appointment will follow the provisions of the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. Starting pay may vary for current State employees.

This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. Pay on appointment will follow the provisions of the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan.

This position is classified as a Fisheries Biologist - Senior in pay schedule and range 15-03.  A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Job Details

Travel: Travel within the assigned geographical area is substantial. There will be limited regionwide and statewide travel.

Fleet Vehicle Policy: The selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment and meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy.  The candidate must be at least 18 years of age with 2 years driving experience. Candidates with three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years, or who have an OWI/DUI violation within the past year are not eligible to drive state vehicles.

Remote Work: Based on an assessment of the goals and work activities, this position may be eligible for remote work. Remote work approval is based on individual circumstances and is subject to supervisor approval and DNR remote work policies. Approval is subject to change without notice based on business needs.


Requirements

Your letter of qualifications and resume are very important parts of your application and are used during our evaluation process to determine your qualifications as they relate to the job.  Please describe the below qualifications in your resume and letter of qualifications to be considered for this position:

Minimally qualified candidates will have ALL of the following:

  • Education in Fisheries Management, Fisheries Science, Fish Ecology, Environmental Biology, Biology or a closely related field (including courses completed, degree's earned, etc.)
  • Experience conducting biological and/or habitat surveys
  • Experience communicating, both in writing & verbally, on biological topics to expert and non-expert audiences through various methods such as in-person presentations, social media, video, newsletters, web content, etc.

In addition, highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following:

  • Experience conducting and planning fisheries surveys including survey design, coordination, and implementation.
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting technical data to formulate conclusions, draft recommendations, and prepare reports for diverse stakeholders (i.e., fisheries, lake, river, and stream user groups; local, federal, state, and tribal government; non-profit environmental/special interest groups and/or the public.
  • Master’s degree or higher in Fisheries Management, Fisheries Science, Fish Ecology, Environmental Biology, Biology or a closely related field.
