The Opportunity
The Jacobo, Balla, and Royer groups are building an interdisciplinary team of researchers with experience in biology, physics, computer science, and microscopy, to study groundbreaking scientific questions using zebrafish as a model system. As part of this effort, we are looking for a dedicated and detail-oriented Aquaculture Technician. . This individual will join an experienced team of investigators and oversee a mid-sized zebrafish facility. The position will require a commitment of 40 hours per week, with a set schedule to be determined based on the availability of the selected individual and the needs of the groups involved in zebrafish research.
You will
- Maintain 3 independent small-sized fish systems, by cleaning tanks and monitoring water quality and routine facility maintenance and upkeep
- Prepare food and feed the fish colonies, with the assistance of our automated fish feeders
- Maintenance of zebrafish stocks by conducting breedings, genotyping, and screening mutant and transgenic lines. This work will be assisted by our state-of-the-art automated fish sorter
- Transport embryos and fish to and from our nearby stock fish facility
- Keep an up-to-date database of fish stocks
- Assist researchers with general fish-husbandry related tasks
- This is a support position and there is no expectation that the applicant will be involved in research activities
Requirements
You have
Essential –
- 1 year of aquaculture experience
- Interest in biology, animal husbandry, animal behavior, or a related field
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Must be a dedicated team player who can also work independently
Nice to have -
- Interest in learning molecular biology and basic microscopy skills
- Experience working at a large-scale fish facility
- Hands-on experience with basic electronics and plumbing
