Job Details

The Aquaculture Specialist provides technical leadership and support to The Nature Conservancy’s fisheries and aquaculture work in the Gulf of California and Mexico’s Northern Pacific (GoC) region. S/he will develop, coordinate, implement and manage projects and provide technical and scientific support for elements of TNC’s Mexico Fisheries and Aquaculture Strategy. The Aquaculture Specialist will be a position within Mexico’s Oceans Team and will report to the Fisheries Lead.
The position will apply a diversified knowledge of aquaculture-related scientific principles and practices to a broad variety of assignments, from research, analysis and writing to strategy development, project coordination and management support, and engagement with key stakeholders particularly coastal communities and producers, government, scientific community, aquaculture industry (cooperatives, aquaculture farms, seafood companies, etc.) and NGO conservation partners. The Aquaculture Specialist ensures the implementation of site-based projects, coordinates with several team members, sets deadlines and manages completion.

The base location for the position will be in La Paz, Mexico. Other locations in Northwest Mexico can be considered. No international relocation, visa sponsorship or assistance is being offered with this position.

This vacancy has a fixed-term contract with the possibility of renewal.

Roles and responsibilities
•    Work with local communities in the Gulf of California and Mexico’s Northern Pacific region, including scoping and community engagement processes and participation, identifying key community members, implementing equity, diversity, and inclusion aspects   with community-based work  
•    Develop  and implement complex projects, from the planning phase to the deliverable completion phase, based on the Fisheries and Aquaculture Strategy for Mexico
•    Support  fisheries and aquaculture legal framework, permitting processes and public policy and engaging TNC’s departments to work on these topics.
•    Develop and implement monitoring and evaluation programs to assess socioecological and environmental benefits
•    Search, manage, and work with broad data bases and fisheries information
•    Use and develop innovative tools and technology for fisheries/aquaculture management, including product development processes and user experience
•    Work in developing, implementing, and monitoring bivalve restoration efforts, including seed and juvenile outplanting, subtidal restoration surveys, socioecological surveys and environmental impacts
•    Work in sustainable mariculture operations, including knowledge in best practices, buildout and maintenance of farm infrastructure, seed acquisition and management and others
•    Work with fisheries and aquaculture supply chain, including buyers, market opportunities, logistics, distribution, and sales in the Gulf of California and Mexico’s Northern Pacific region
•    Facilitate large and complex multistakeholder processes, coordinating and facilitating meetings and workshops
•    Support the Oceans Lead and Fisheries Lead with fundraising efforts, including writing and editing proposals, reports, and fundraising materials, as well as with fundraising trips and events, in order to ensure that the programs fundraising targets are met
•    Ensure program compliance with internal policies and external requirements          
•    Under minimal supervision, makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context
•    Gains cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals
•    May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances

Requirements

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

•    BA/BS, law or business degree and 5 years’ experience in natural resource management or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
•    Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience
•    Experience with project management, including project design, implementation and monitoring
•    Experience negotiating complex agreements.  
•    Demonstrated experience and knowledge in the aquaculture/mariculture field in the Gulf of California and Mexico’s Northern Pacific region
•    Demonstrated experience in effective partnership development (i.e., fishing cooperatives, seafood industry, and government agencies)
•    Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally.
•    Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Web Browsers.
•    Experience working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development and meeting fundraising
 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•    Knowledge on native bivalve species in the Gulf of California and Mexico’s Northern Pacific region
•    Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
•    Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in Spanish and English
