Palacios Marine Agricultural Research is seeking a Nursery Biologist to join our hatchery team. This role is essential in overseeing the nursery phase of bivalve culture, ensuring optimal growth and survival post-settlement, and supervising nursery staff. The ideal candidate will be committed to maintaining a safe and inclusive working environment while fostering continuous improvements in nursery operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently oversee and execute all aspects of bivalve nursery culture operations during assigned shifts.
  • Maintain optimal environmental conditions to support the proper nutrition and growth of juvenile bivalves.
  • Monitor and manage water quality parameters, flow rates, and system maintenance.
  • Supervise and mentor nursery workers, ensuring optimal growth conditions are maintained.
  • Collaborate with the Hatchery Manager to develop and refine nursery protocols.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure precise data measurement for continuous improvement.
  • Train and support junior staff in nursery operations and safety practices.
  • Ensure a safe working environment for all nursery staff.
  • Willingness to take on other duties as assigned to support hatchery operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or a minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in bivalve nursery culture within a hatchery setting.
  • Physically capable of working in high-heat environments and performing physically demanding tasks (reasonable accommodations will be provided in compliance with the ADA).
  • Strong understanding of post-settlement growth, nutrition, and water quality management.
  • Ability to work independently and take full responsibility for nursery operations during designated shifts.
  • Experience with flow-through and recirculating nursery systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Willing to work shifts that provide 7-day coverage for all areas of operation.
  • Willing to work the majority of shifts outdoors
