Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Aquatic Animal Health

The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time assistant/associate/full professor position (tenure track) to develop an exceptional research program and contribute to the aquatic animal health program, which includes a state-of-the-art aquatic research facility located in the veterinary college.

Candidates having a D.V.M. degree or equivalent and/or PhD training and practical experience will be considered. The successful applicant will be expected to build and maintain an active research program in fish health, and candidates working on infectious diseases of fish will be preferred. Other desirable qualities of the successful candidate include an interest in sustainable aquaculture production, climate change, population health, and aquatic invertebrates. Strong interpersonal skills, leadership ability, public-speaking experience, and the ability to work in collaborative research, diagnostic, clinical, and teaching environments are required.

The successful candidate will be expected to take on a multi-faceted role that includes developing an active and extramurally funded research program, as well as additional specific roles, including (1) Providing expertise in diagnosis, treatment, and pathological examination of fish for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Cornell Animal Health Diagnostic Center. (2) Serving as one of the Associate Directors of AQUAVET® at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, providing operational direction to a diverse program incorporating many topics relating to aquatic organisms, their environment, and the application of traditional veterinary disciplines to aquatic animals.

In conjunction with the diagnostic services provided, the candidate will communicate with fish culturists, the general public, and fish biologists from state and federal agencies to educate and investigate the spread of important fish pathogens. Mentoring of graduate and DVM students, wildlife interns, and anatomic pathology residents is required. The individual will also contribute to the College of Veterinary Medicine’s missions in a diverse array of topics including disease ecology, aquaculture, fish mortality events, risk management, diagnostic development, pathogen discovery, food systems and public health, and ecosystem health. The development of an interdisciplinary research program with positive impacts of local and international significance is encouraged. The candidate will be expected to develop, maintain, and teach in special training programs such as AQUAVET® and advance the aquatic health curriculum to recruit and train veterinarians for future roles in veterinary medicine that support aquatic food production and aquatic ecosystems. Outreach activities engaging stakeholders of the aquaculture industry and related fields are also encouraged.

The individual will have their academic home in the transdisciplinary Department of Public & Ecosystem Health, but will interact broadly with faculty in the Cornell Animal Health Diagnostic Center and other Departments throughout the College of Veterinary Medicine. The candidate will also work closely with faculty within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, which is making several hires in marine sciences, and units/initiatives across campus interested in aquatic animal medicine, public health, sustainable food production, and advanced diagnostic technologies including eDNA. This position is full-time (12-month), with initial appointment being for three years with opportunity for renewal contingent on funding and successful annual reviews.

The salary range for this position is $120,000 to $180,000 and will be commensurate with credentials and experience.
