Research and Scholarly Activities (50%)
40% Scholarship and Creative Activities
Develop an externally funded program conducting original and independent research and training, focusing on key issues in West Coast aquaculture and the marine environment, with an emphasis on shellfish and seaweed.
Participate in multidisciplinary collaborative opportunities with faculty members from CAS, FWCS, the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station in Newport and Astoria, and other OSU Colleges and Departments, as well as with industry stakeholders and faculty and staff from external universities and agencies.
Serve as an investigator on a USDA-NIFA (www.nifa.usda.gov/) Hatch collaborative or Hatch multistate project.
Develop and present research scholarship to peer audiences and policy-makers.
Mentor graduate students or undergraduate researchers who contribute to the incumbent’s research accomplishments, including serving as major professor for graduate students.
Maintain an externally funded research program that adheres to OSU’s requirements for compliance and safety.
Conduct research that leads to scholarly outcomes, including refereed journal articles, oral and poster presentations, or proceedings of professional meetings.
Play a strong supporting role for the new Pacific Shellfish Research Unit (PSRU) within USDA.
10% Research Program Management
Provide leadership and decision-making in research directions and planning and obtain external financial support for research programs.
Develop and oversee research program budgets, competently administer budgetary and financial matters, plan and manage project resources, lab space, and equipment.
Recruit, supervise, and mentor graduate students, faculty research assistants, or research associates undertaking research projects. Serve as a committee member on graduate student committees.
Ensure students and other laboratory workers are in compliance with laboratory safety, chemical hazard training, and adhere to safety requirements for handling and storing laboratory materials.
Teaching and Advising (25%)
Teach courses annually in an appropriate department, amounting to 3-6 credit hours in total. These may include graduate or undergraduate courses, on-campus or E-campus courses and experiential “hands-on” courses or
workshops.
Contribute to teaching of graduate or undergraduate level courses, seminars, workshops, guest lectures, and/or
discussion groups at HMSC.
Advise and mentor undergraduates or serve on committees of graduate students for which the incumbent is not
serving as major professor.
Outreach (15%)
Research will be engaging stakeholder groups including private fishery organizations, private aquaculture organizations, state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and coastal communities.
The outreach program is expected to lead to scholarly outcomes including, but not limited to:
Discovery, creativity, integration, research, and applications communicated through regional, statewide, national, or international peer-reviewed or peer-refereed publications, as appropriate.
Development and communication of innovative educational materials and effective teaching methods that meet clientele needs, with materials, methods and outcomes.
Service (10%)
The incumbent is expected to serve the Unit, Department, College, and University in ways that are relevant to their assigned duties, such as membership on standing committees, searches, etc. They are also expected to serve their profession (examples include, but are not limited to, refereeing for professional journals and granting agencies, being an associate editor for a journal within their discipline, and serving as an advisory member for state resource agency committees).
