Job Details

The Fishery Officer will support the development, management and analysis of fisheries and aquaculture data and information systems, contributing to the innovation and integration of standards, tools and methodologies along the data value chain. The Fishery Officer will assist in strengthening FAO's capacity to deliver evidence-based policy support, global reporting and knowledge products, and enhance the visibility and accessibility of fisheries and aquaculture information.

Collection and analysis of information, data and statistics and project/meeting services to support programme projects, products and services.

Key Functions
 

  • Collects and analyses relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related information, data and/or statistics to support the delivery of programme projects, as well as products and services.
  • Undertakes analysis, provides technical input for plans and reports and edits/revises technical/scientific documents.
  • Participates in the development of improved work methods, tools and systems.
  • Updates databases and web pages.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary project/work teams.
  • Collaborates in the development of training tools and materials and the organization of workshops/seminars, etc.
  • Participates in the organization, conduct and follow-up of meetings, consultations and conferences, the development/production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners.
     

Specific Functions
 

  • Supports data management, processing and analysis activities underpinning FAO fisheries and aquaculture knowledge products.
  • Contributes to the design of data models and web-based user interfaces for the development of knowledge products.
  • Assists in the development and application of data and metadata standards, methodologies and tools to improve data quality, interoperability and dissemination.
  • Provides support to the maintenance and content management of FAO fisheries and aquaculture web platforms and information systems.
  • Contributes to the implementation of web-based information systems and platforms, including content structuring and data integration.
  • Contributes to the preparation, editing and review of technical documents, reports and communication materials.
  • Supports capacity development activities and projects, including training and technical assistance to Members on data collection, management and reporting systems.
  • Participates in the coordination with partners and stakeholders, including international and regional organizations, in support of data sharing and information initiatives.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in biology, fishery science, natural sciences, marine ecology or related discipline.
  • Three years of relevant experience in fisheries or aquaculture data management, analysis, information systems or related fields.
  • Working knowledge (proficiency - level C) of English and intermediate knowledge (intermediate proficiency - level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills

•    Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions, is desirable.
•    Extent and relevance of experience in data and information management, including databases and information systems.
•    Relevance of experience in data modelling, database design and data structures.
•    Relevance of experience in web-based publishing and/or web-content management, including familiarity with dissemination policies and practices;
•    Extent and relevance of experience in collecting and analysing technical information and data, preferably in fisheries or related fields.
•    Relevance of experience in supporting trainings, workshops or capacity development activities.
•    Relevance of experience in project support, including requirements gathering and interaction with technical teams.
•    Quality of analytical skills and ability to synthesize technical information.
•    Ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
•    Demonstrated initiative, sense of responsibility, and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
