Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a Research Assistant with Civil Engineering at the University of Galway, Ireland.  

This position is funded by Interreg Atlantic Area and is available immediately.  The currently available funding will support a 9-month Research Assistant position. 

The aim of the project is to strengthen the resilience of Atlantic aquaculture to climate change. The project will evaluate the vulnerability of aquaculture species and environments to changes in temperature, salinity and water quality, ensuring the sustainability of the sector. The project will promote climate adaptation and risk prevention through a development of scalable solutions that boost the environmental and economic sustainability of the aquaculture sector. l

Requirements

Essential requirements: • MSc in mathematics, physics, oceanography, engineering, environmental science or related area. • Experience in working with large datasets. • Proven track record in using one or more scripting languages, e.g. MATLAB, Python or similar. • Demonstrated experience in statistical/probabilistic analysis. • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships. • Demonstrated excellent communication skills in English. Desirable requirements: • Experience in statistical downscaling techniques. • Experience in machine learning and data mining. • Competence in a GIS environment. • Ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision. • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
