The School of Marine and Environmental Programs (SMEP) in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of New England (UNE) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Marine Sciences, starting in August 2026. We seek an ichthyologist with a particular interest in elasmobranchs and an understanding of fish biology, ecology, and/or fisheries science. The successful candidate will join a diverse group of faculty and staff with expertise across a broad array of specialties including invertebrate biology and physiology, ecology, marine mammalogy, aquaculture, oceanography, climate change natural and social science, GIS, and marine policy and management.

The school seeks candidates who can teach marine science lecture and laboratory courses at the introductory level and upper-level lecture and laboratory courses in the areas of fish biology, ecology, physiology, and fisheries science, This position typically teaches the equivalent of 8-9 credits per semester (9 – 12 contact hours). The candidate is expected to develop an active, externally funded independent research program involving undergraduate and graduate students that results in peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate will also participate in curriculum development, academic advising, recruiting, course and program assessment, and service to the school, college and university.

Requirements

A Ph.D. in biology, marine sciences, zoology, fisheries, or a related field is required. Post-doctoral training is preferred. The successful candidate must have a well-rounded knowledge of biology of fish, fisheries ecology, fisheries research methods, study designs, and analyses. Candidates who use techniques that would further our students’ general preparedness for their future careers (e.g., molecular analysis, technology development, etc.) and who do fieldwork in regional ecosystems will be strongly considered. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and have a record of scholarly productivity; candidates with a record of competitive grant funding are preferable.
