Job Details
The research professional will serve as principal investigator on a multidisciplinary project studying microplastic pollution in freshwater systems funding by a Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund Grant. This role blends field and laboratory research, behavioral ecology, data analysis, scientific writing, and collaboration with academic partners and municipal agencies. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in behavioral ecology research, especially with aquatic snails, and will be responsible for both research management and hands-on experimentation with minimal supervision. Key Responsibilities Oversee the daily operations of the microplastics research project, ensuring timely progress toward milestones and deliverables of the granting agency. Research Design and Data Collection (50%): Develop methods and design field sampling campaigns in stormwater systems in the Twin Cities Metro Area. Collect, process, and analyze environmental samples for microplastic content using established protocols. Maintain laboratory equipment, manage sample inventories, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. Conduct behavioral assays with freshwater snails to assess the ecological and behavioral impacts of microplastic exposure, including experimental design, implementation, and data interpretation. Oversee the care, husbandry, and maintenance of snails in an aquaculture setting to ensure animal welfare and experimental integrity. Data Analysis, Writing, and Documentation (30%): Analyze large datasets using statistical and geospatial tools to interpret microplastic distribution and biological effects. Prepare technical reports, data visualizations, and presentations for scientific and public audiences. Lead the writing of peer-reviewed manuscripts, technical reports, and grant proposals. Present research findings at scientific conferences, public forums, and stakeholder meetings. Management and Collaboration (20%) Coordinate activities and communication among research team members, students, and external collaborators. Serve as the primary liaison with freshwater management agencies, city officials, and other stakeholders. Provide support in mentoring undergraduate researchers and graduate students through the MSP LTER (Minneapolis-Saint Paul Long Term Ecological Research Program).Requirements
Required Qualifications: PhD in Environmental Science, Ecology, Behavioral Ecology, or a related field. 3 – 5 years' experience contributing to collaborative interdisciplinary projects. Past publication record in peer reviewed journals. Demonstrated experience in field and laboratory research, with a focus on microplastics or aquatic pollution. Experience conducting behavioral ecology research, including behavioral assays with aquatic invertebrates (preferably snails). Proven experience in the care and husbandry of snails or similar organisms in an aquaculture or laboratory setting. Strong data analysis skills (e.g., R, Python, GIS). Excellent organizational and project management abilities. Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective team and stakeholder coordination. Valid driver’s license and ability to conduct fieldwork in various weather conditions. Preferred: Experience managing multidisciplinary research teams. Familiarity with freshwater management agencies and urban water systems in the Twin Cities. Grant writing and budget management experience. Familiarity with multiple statistical and modelling approaches, including Bayesian approaches.Contact Information
