Imports of Live Aquatic Animals - Risks and Rewards

This session will address issues of importing live aquatic animals (LAA) intended for commercial aquaculture with a focus on controlling the risk of introducing significantly detrimental pathogens into the United States yet not unduly interfering with trade in LAAs. Topics covered will include the current regulatory landscape and gaps therein, industry concerns and perspectives on imports of LAA, regulatory and economic considerations utilized by APHIS regarding implementing health related controls on imports of LAAs, recent events regarding tilapia lake virus (TILV) in tilapia and shrimp viral agents and APHIS rule promulgation on TILV and a panel discussion of overall issues.
