In 2015, the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi initiated Open Sea fish farming in Greece, off the northeastern slopes of Mount Athos Peninsula.
The farm was established in short time period, with initially 4 Tension Leg Cages. After t wo years of successful operation, the farm facility was expanded with 3 more TLC cages of larger diameter, doubling the production capacity.
We illustrate herewith the principal elements required to set-up this farm, and key steps to ensure easy operational management of the facility.
The implementation of simple and reliable technical solutions, coupled with a devoted approach by the monks in tackling the challenges of a novel activity in harsh marine conditions, were key to the success of this venture.
