Economic necessity has driven technological advancement in the United States catfish industry. Surveys conducted by Hegde et al. in 2019 and 2020 across the main catfish producing states show how the adoption of more intensive production methods, such as intensively aerated and split ponds, has increased markedly. This Recent Research Highlight from the Journal of the World Aquaculture Society has been accompanied by the adoption of technologies such as fixed paddlewheel aerators and automated oxygen controls. Developments are not only based on new technologies, but biological and biotechnical advances as well. Hybrid catfish have also been adopted commensurate with intensification, now becoming the dominant variety for cultivation. In addition, vaccination of fingerlings has been widely adopted as oral vaccinations have been developed. Over the nine years to 2019, the industry has increased output by 59 percent as a result of technological modernization alone. Monitoring of technological developments allows researchers and technology developers to follow and adapt their efforts to future needs. This means that novel technologies are tailored to improved, economically viable production and are suitable for transfer to new users.
