WWW.WAS.ORG • WORLD AQUACULTURE • JUNE 2025 73 in saline solution of 0.9 g/L at room temperature is possible but it results in decreased milt quality as preservation time increases. During preservation beyond the 6 h time point, very low values of milt quality parameters were obtained. From the given data, it can be obtained that the storage time for milt using saline solution (0.9 g/L) must not be extended beyond 6 h. Conclusion While milt stored for up to six hours maintained acceptable levels of sperm motility, concentration, fertilization rate, and hatchability, storage beyond this period resulted in a sharp decline in reproductive efficiency. These results suggest that normal saline can be used as a short-term preservation medium, but prolonged storage negatively impacts sperm viability. The study underscores the need for efficient handling and timely utilization of preserved milt to optimize artificial breeding outcomes in aquaculture. Recommendations Future research should focus on exploring alternative extenders that could prolong milt viability beyond six hours without compromising fertilization efficiency. Hatchery operators and fish farmers should adopt best practices for milt handling, including timely fertilization and proper dilution ratios, to enhance breeding success. Additionally, extension services and aquaculture training programs should educate fish farmers on effective milt preservation techniques to improve artificial reproduction efficiency in C. gariepinus farming.
