This study was the first attempt to construct a culture-based fishery for S. spilurus with the stocking densities described above. Methods The research was conducted at the National Aquaculture Development Center at Dambulla, under the National Aquaculture Development Authority. The normal daytime water temperature in Dambulla ranges from 25°C to 30°C. Sixteen 86 cm long × 70 cm wide ×25 cm tall tanks were cleaned and allowed to dry properly under sunlight. Each tank was filled with water a depth of 25 cm (150 L). Aeration was provided and small pieces of PVC pipe (2 per tank) were added into each tank to create cover.
