World Aquaculture - September 2024

68 SEPTEMBER 2024 • WORLD AQUACULTURE • WWW.WAS.ORG FAO’s 36th Committee, cont. from page 13 participated on the Committee on Fisheries, and more relevantly, on the Sub-Committee on Aquaculture. Dr. Garza de Yta underscored WAS’s strong support for the recently adopted Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA). The FAO prepared these guidelines to support efforts at all levels for enhancing the important role of aquaculture towards the eradication of hunger and poverty and to support socioeconomic development, in full respect of the environment, biodiversity and ecosystem functions. Going forward, WAS’s collaboration efforts with the FAO will be largely centered on mainstreaming these adopted guidelines. The GSA will now inform the programmatic work of FAO in implementing its Blue Transformation roadmap, ensuring that all aquaculture projects and programmes are pulling in the same direction. Lastly, Dr. Garza de Yta invited members, government agencies, both national and international, and the private sector to envision WAS as their global partner for promoting the educational, scientific, and technological advances of aquaculture; gathering and disseminating technical information on aquaculture; and encouraging aquaculture research, development, and educational activities. He expressed WAS’s commitment to support FAO and the more than 100 country members who have interacted with WAS through its 55 years of history in the development of sustainable aquaculture worldwide. Looking ahead, amongst other global and regional events, the FAO is expected to feature at the upcoming WAS Aquaculture Africa 2024 Conference scheduled for Hammamet, Tunisia (19-22 November 2024). The FAO envisages to organize another “FAO Africa Aquaculture Day” session during the Conference. Details about Aquaculture Africa are available at https://www.was.org/meeting/code/AFRAQ24.
