In return, USAS and WAS benefit from a large and diverse student membership which brings both new perspectives and updates on the latest student-led research. In 2016, the USAS membership approved a By-law amendment that extended this student opportunity to other learning institutions, such as high schools. The first high school Student Subunit was formed at Auburn High School in Auburn, AL with the hopes of engaging secondary students and encouraging interaction with both the University Chapter(s) and the Society. The history of USAS Student Subunits is rich and diverse. In addition to the opportunities these Subunits provide, USAS Boards, past and present, have worked hard to ensure students, whether Society members or not, feel valued and respected and are provided unique opportunities to learn about aquaculture. In the last 10 years, the value and number of USAS student awards for travel and presentations has increased dramatically, and students have risen to the occasion to take advantage of these opportunities. Student mentoring has also been a huge success — on both sides of the equation. Many USAS Presidents, Board Members, and students have worked to create these long-lasting student opportunities. Thank you to all USAS members and students who have been instrumental in forming, running, and growing these Subunits for over 20 years now! Below is a list of all USAS Subunits with the dates of inception and initial faculty advisors: Student Subunits have significantly impacted USAS, and we hope other Chapters of the World Aquaculture Society (WAS) will consider the formation of their own Student Subunits.
