WWW.WAS.ORG • WORLD AQUACULTURE • SEPTEMBER 2024 19 2000s and is currently focused on mass production for aquaculture industrialization, using land-based aquaculture. Research on Ben-ja-ri (chicken grunt, Parapristipoma trilineatum) began in the early 2010s and is currently underway with the Gyeongsangnam-do Fisheries Resources Research Institute to identify the potential for Gaduri (cage) aquaculture. Jaes-bang-eo (greater amberjack, Seriola dumerili) and Heug-jeom-jul-jeon-gaeng-i (white trevally, Pseudocaranx dentex) are species for which aquaculture-based research has not been conducted in Korea so the Institute will conduct this research sequentially. Cooperation and Collaboration Some local governments wondered if the NIFS plays the role of a control tower in managing and distributing research, cooperating, and sharing. “Local governments are the ones with the best information on the marine environment, ecosystem, and native species in their respective regions,” a local government official said. In response to concerns about the potential waste of workforce and budget that may arise from studying the same species, the answer was, “Local governments are participating in the council or are in close contact to share technology and prior research and cooperate.” The NIFS established comprehensive measures to respond to high temperatures in 2018 and began full-scale research on breeding and developing new varieties. This is being pursued by the mid- to longterm R&D policies of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the NIFS. However, warnings of climate change have been around for over a decade, and some have questioned whether the NIFS’ research and response to climate change are too late. A researcher at a government agency who requested anonymity said, “By the time the research and development are commercialized, the climate has changed again, and the marine environment has changed again,” and expressed concern that the pace of R&D has not kept up with the pace of climate change.
