WWW.WAS.ORG • WORLD AQUACULTURE • JUNE 2024 51 Fortifying BSFL aquafeeds with essential minerals offers a diverse approach for advancing aquaculture practices. Addressing the mineral deficiencies in BSFL feeds paves the way for promoting healthier fish populations, more sustainable food systems and potentially increased profitability. This further solidifies the position of BSFL as a game-changer in the aquaculture industry. Future Considerations: Black soldier fly larval meal has great potential in aquaculture. Thus, some of the future considerations to consider are: • The need for further research on novel fortification technologies targeting different minerals and BSFL production systems, • Exploration of innovative strategies to integrate use of BSFL in aquafeeds while taking circular economy principles into account, and • Addressing potential socio-economic implications of large scale production of BSFL in aquaculture and potential impact on existing aquaculture practices. Conclusion Fortifying BSFL aquafeeds with essential minerals offers a diverse approach for advancing aquaculture practices. Addressing the mineral deficiencies in BSFL feeds paves the way for promoting healthier fish populations, more sustainable food systems and potentially increased profitability. This further solidifies the position of BSFL as a game-changer in the aquaculture industry. Further research and continued development of such innovative strategies holds important promise for ensuring food security for the growing global population while ensuring more resilient and eco-friendly protein production systems.
