Markham, Univ. of Florida WAS Student Spotlight Awards The tradition of highlighting student research at WAS conferences continued during the plenary session of Aquaculture America 2023. Prior to the conference, student research submissions were evaluated to determine the top student abstracts. Three students were invited to present a short three-minute summary of their presentation during the conference plenary. As part of the WAS Conference App, audience members voted their preferences. The winner of the Spotlight Competition received $500, with the second and third place winners both receiving $200 each. The winner of the Student Spotlight Competition was Helen Montague of Auburn University for her presentation on “Outcomes of In Vitro Fertilization with Frozen-thawed Blue Catfish Sperm and Implications for Gene Banking.” The two runner-up winners were Amanda Matthews of Florida Atlantic University for her presentation on “Suaeda linearis: An Emerging Superfood Sea Vegetable” and Marianne Parent of the University of Prince Edward Island for “Time-series Analysis of Lepeophtheirus salmonis Among New Brunswick Salmon Farms (2016 to 2021).” WAS Oral Presentation and Poster Awards Best Oral Thesis and Dissertation Presentation Award ($2000): Casey Murray, Ph.D. Student, University of Florida, for “Examining the Digestive Physiology of Larval Betta splendens to Improve Larval Culture Protocols.” Best Oral Thesis and Dissertation Presentation Award ($2000): Sarah W.
