According to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), this initiative is an example of a holistic approach, primarily focussing on gender equality (SDG 5) and the perseverance work in this line opens a pathway for stable economic growth (SDG 8). As part of this effort, the developed technology on ornamental shrimp rearing was disseminated to the island community of Agatti Island, Lakshadweep, prioritizing women (Ajith Kumar et al. 2020). Women were given practical knowledge on shrimp rearing and encouraged to adopt this as an alternate/ additional livelihood option. Island women were counselled to practice the rearing of ornamental shrimps to get a reasonable income, as they don’t have many options for alternate or additional livelihoods. Another major attraction of shrimp rearing is that the area occupied is low and hence can be practised in a backyard rearing unit. It is an excellent option for developing community aquaculture units. This ensures the sustainable use and protection of ocean resources (SDG 14) helping in restoration of the ocean wealth. Marine ornamental shrimp rearing is a potential option for coastal and island communities in India and it will help conserve marine biodiversity. This venture adds bright colors to the Blue Economy.
