While video data is an important tool and is particularly compelling to human operators, visual identification has several limitations as it requires sufficient light to view a subject, requires an animal to breach the surface and has a limited effective range. To augment visual identification, audio data from deployed hydrophones is a critical tool for detecting marine mammal species. Acoustic signals of species such as whales can travel over vast distances through the ocean and can be detected at a range of several kilometers. To harness the power of bioacoustic data, researchers at Synthetik have developed tools that use machine detect signatures of species of interest from cameras and hydrophones using machine learning models. Detection events are uploaded to an online dashboard where users can view paired video and audio recordings. Demonstration deployments of two prototype devices are currently underway in the northeast US at facilities operated by the University of New Hampshire and Salem State University to conduct system testing and gather additional data. Subaquatic Acoustic Detection Two machine learning models are critical to the operation of the DeepSeaVision platform (Fig. 1). First, a computer vision algorithm is used to process video data in real-time to identify any FIGURE 2. Spectrograms of calls from a North Atlantic right whale, orca whale and humpback whale (L-R).
