World Aquaculture Magazine - March 2021
72 MARCH 2021 • WORLD AQUACULTURE • WWW.WA S .ORG Ed was one of the first to fully understand the amazing potential impact that genetics could have in the shrimp farming industry. He was a pioneer of commercial genetic selection as applied to shrimp. Ed was a risk taker, a gentleman, a pioneer. Never commonplace, always coming at you from left field with a fresh way to look at things. Always original and unconventional to the point of irreverence, Ed was a visionary and an original thinker. — Lorenzo Juarez A gifted, brilliant, aquaculture visionary he was. SIS was Ed’s personal and professional magnum opus and it is indisputable that Ed and SIS transformed the nascent commercial shrimp broodstock industry into the global powerhouse that it is today. — Henry Clifford MPEDA (The Marine Products Exports Development Authority, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India) initiated a pilot project on artificial seed production called TASPARC (The Andhra Pradesh Shrimp Seed Production Supply and Research Centre). Ed Scura and his team played an important role in the development of skilled manpower in India. Today, the large number of hatchery technologists that are available in India is the result of direct or indirect contributions of Ed Scura and his team. — Dr. G.
