In addition, King flounder females grow faster than males, so the production cost of raising them to market size can be reduced by 20 percent. The NIFS has been supplying fertilized King Flounder eggs directly to the private sector since 2010, and through continuous follow-up research, the exclusive license was recently transferred to the private sector for the first time in ten years. Through numerous trials and errors, the original technology to produce fertilized King Flounder year-round has been secured and transferred to private companies to revitalize the flounder aquaculture industry by supplying fertilized eggs autonomously. Private companies that received King Flounder’s broodfish are expected to be able to supply fertilized eggs smoothly at the desired time. The NIFS plans to resolve difficulties at farms through continuous monitoring of the overall process of producing fertilized eggs and seedlings and providing training. The 25th Ocean Day The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Seong- Hyuk Moon) held the 25th Ocean Day Celebration at the National Maritime Science Museum in Uljin, Gyeongbuk-do Province, with the theme of “New hope in the sea, Sea power hoping again.” Ocean Day (May 31 every year) is a national anniversary designated in 1996 to promote the importance of the sea to the public and increase pride in the marine environment and fisheries people. This year’s Ocean Day celebration was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Seong-Hyuk Moon, Minister of MOF, Mr. Chul-Woo Lee, Governor of Gyeongbuk-do Province, Mr. Chan-Geol Jeon, Mayor of Uljin County and minimum numbers of related fields participated in the ceremony in accordance with thorough quarantine rules. Over 200 people attended the ceremony online remotely. New Fast Seafood Products The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is developing convenient seafoods using Korean fisheries products to explore overseas markets in response to the increasing demand for fast foods around the world due to the influence of COVID-19. Nine new products will be developed this year, including fish pancakes using flounder, mackerel stew and sesame crab stew, which can be easily cooked with a microwave oven or air fryer at home. The MOF will support distribution in domestic and overseas fast food markets. Although Korean fisheries products have a high potential for growth in domestic and overseas markets due to their excellent taste and nutrition, people do not prefer fisheries products due to the characteristics of seafood that easily spoil at room temperature C H A P T E R R E P O R T S
