World Aquaculture 63 WAS student members excel in Busan, Korea The WAS student members added great value to World Aquaculture 2008 in Busan, Korea. The competition for the best oral and poster presentations by student members was tight and the judges had difficulty picking the “best of the best” for awards. However, the top two oral and poster presentations were awarded to the following: First Place - Student Oral Presentation Award: “Desiccation of the economically important genus Porphyra (=Nori) alters nitrogen metabolism in a novel way” by Mr. Jang K. Kim, University of Connecticut, Connecticut, USA. Second Place - Student Oral Presentation Award: “Effects of probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus rhamnosus in stress response in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus” by Ms. Ana Teresa Gonçalves, Tokyo University Marine Science and Technology, Tokyo, Japan. First Place - Student Poster Award: “Texture rheology and freshness quality of wild and cultured red seabream Pagrus major” by Ms. Connie Fay Komilus, Laboratory of Aquatic Animal Nutrition, Faculty of Fisheries, Kagoshima University, Kagoshima, Japan. Second Place - Student Poster Award: “Effects of dietary heat-killed Lactobacillus plantarum on growth performances, stress resistance and protease activity of postlarvae Kuruma shrimp Marsupenaeus japonicus Bate” by Mr. Ha Thanh Tung, Laboratory of Aquatic Animal Nutrition, Faculty of Fisheries, Kagoshima University, Kagoshima, Japan. Each first place recipient received $400 and second place $200. Each was awarded a certificate of recognition. In addition to these awards, the Aquaculture and Fisheries Cooperative Research Support Program (CRSP) presented three awards to students with the best posters pertaining to sustainable aquaculture practices. First place received $400 and the next two received $200. The winners were: First Place: “Evaluation of meat and bone meal in the practical diet for Sutchi catfish, Pangasius hypophthalmus (Sauvage) reared under pond condition” by Md. Abdul Kader, Laboratory of Aquatic Animal Nutrition, Faculty of Fisheries, Kagoshima University, Kagoshima, Japan. Second Place: “Effect of various sources of dietary additives on growth and body composition of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus” by Bum-Hee Park, Division of Marine Environment and BioScience, College of Ocean Science and Technology, Korea Maritime University, Busan, Korea. Second Place: “Dietary requirement of myo-inositol in juvenile parrot fish Oplegnathus fasciatus” by German Bueno Galaz, Department of Marine Life Science, Cheju National University, Jeju, South Korea The WAS Student Activities Committee greatly appreciates the WAS members who graciously volunteered to judge Ha Thanh Tung (second from right) received second place for his student poster at Busan. None of these awards would be possible without their hard work and dedication. We also thank the student advisors who have worked so diligently with their students. All the students who gave oral and poster presentations should be very proud of their hard work. Students who are WAS members by the abstract due date of November 1, 2008, will also be eligible to participate in student awards in Veracruz, Mexico, at the World Aquaculture 2009, May 25 - 29, 2009. We encourage all students to become WAS members now and reap the benefits. Don’t wait, do it now!
